Real Madrid visited the dreaded Wanda Metropolitano stadium and got a draw in a characteristics difficult and very tight soccer match.
Atletico Madrid were as physical as ever with a strong defense that Madrid couldn’t break through in the 90 minutes of play.
Since Atletico Madrid moved to the Wanda Metropolitano, they have played 42 games, won 29 with 11 draws and just 2 losses, and they have managed to keep 29 clean sheets; it tells you that they are always a hard but to crack and Zidane’s men knew that very well.
A brief statistics of the Madrid derby:
When it comes to the Madrid derby, Real Madrid still have the upper hand; with 138 wins against atletico Madrid’s 68, and 468 goals against atletico’s 348 with 65 draws, Los rojiblancos still have a long way to go to catch up with their fiercest city rivals.
Atletico Madrid haven’t won Real Madrid since moving to the Wanda Metropolitano; they have recorded 2 draws and 1 defeat against Los merengues.
Los rojiblancos have only won Real Madrid once at home(at the former Vincente Calderon stadium) in 20 years, and I will never forget that match on 7th February 2015 where Atletico defeated Madrid by 4:0(even with Cristiano Ronaldo and his BBC gang playing 90 minutes).
Before Diego Someone came to atletico as their manger, they have lost 20 of the 30 Madrid derbies played(only winning 2 with 8 draws),
But in the last 30 derbies of “El Chulo” era, he has only lost 10, with an improved 9 wins and 11 draws.
His reign have brought some stability in the Madrid derby and the club are forever indebted to the Argentine talisman and tactician.
Did Real Madrid deserve a win?
Zinedine Zidane, real Madrid’s coach said that his team deserved more than the point they got at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
He believed his boys should have secured a win, but nevertheless, they really gave their all and best especially in the second half.
Oblak was just the savior for atletico Madrid when he saved Karim Benzema’s header 15 minutes to the end of the match, and that by far was the best chance of the match.
Also real Madrid had a 56% ball possession while Atletico managed 44% at their home ground.
Madrid had 14 shots and Los rojiblancos only 7; the home team only had 1 shot on target(very poor) while Real Madrid got 3 shots on target.
Real Madrid should have taking a slight victory last night but a goaless draw which is now becoming a normal for the Madrid derby isn’t bad…
At least they are the only team undefeated in la liga this season and they sit pretty top at the table with 15 points after 7 matches.
